Design Story

This pure silk masterpiece embodies the sacred geometry and architectural grace of the Persia, a form that has evolved over centuries as both spiritual object and artistic achievement. The design draws inspiration from the mihrab—the ornamental prayer niche found in medevial Persian mosques that indicates the direction of Mecca—transforming this devotional motif into a secular work of meditative beauty.

At the heart of the composition lies a deeply saturated wine-red field, framed by an elegant lobed arch that creates a sanctuary-like space. This architectural niche is anchored at top and bottom by ornate cartouches rendered in apricot and gold, their surfaces alive with intricate arabesque scrollwork. The spandrels—those graceful corners where the arch meets the border—are rendered in soft sage-blue and ivory, densely populated with delicate floral tendrils and palmettes that create a lace-like effect.

The central field glows with a finely articulated sunburst medallion positioned at the heart of the composition, surrounded by a constellation of stylized blossoms, vines, and Shah Abbas palmettes that flow across the wine ground in perpetual motion. The outermost ivory border serves as a luminous frame, densely embroidered with meandering vines and micro-floral patterns that require exceptional knot density to achieve such definition.

Hand-knotted at 484 knots per square inch (60 Raj, approximately 0.75 million knots per square meter), this carpet represents the pinnacle of Kashmiri silk weaving. Each knot contributes to a surface that shifts subtly with light—silk's natural luster creating depth and dimensionality that wool cannot replicate.

The design speaks to Kashmir's centuries-old dialogue with Persian aesthetics, where the mihrab form—once strictly devotional—has been reinterpreted as pure ornament, celebrating beauty, symmetry, and the meditative qualities of pattern itself.
